Bringing the kids to the Zoo and Night Safari

30 September 2007 3 Comments

Warning: VERY picture intensive post!!

We brought the kids to the zoo and Night Safari on Saturday. To say that we were a little ambitious to want to attempt both places on the same day is an understatement. We were exhausted at the end of the day! But I must say we had lots of fun (as usual) and we picked up some interesting facts about animals.

Orang-utans

These birds are like gatekeepers here. They are permanently perched here..

Until one felt the need to stand and take a shit. LOL

Germaine got picked to be a volunteer again! The hostess was

asking for a volunteer and she enthusiastically raised her hand

and shouted, “me, me!!” :)

NO stage fright and utmost confidence. Am so proud of my girl. *beams*

Posing with ice cream. *rolls eyes*

At a junction in the zoo, suddenly we saw this carriage turning around the bend…

Awwwww, so romantic!! A pony as ringbearer. Awwww….

The beautiful bride and her groom being driven in a horse carriage.

Big congratulated them and they gamely thanked us. Complete strangers

giving complete strangers well wishes and congratulations. How nice is that?

The stately horse drawing the carriage

The ceremony overlooking the beautiful serenity of the lake

Happy couple being joined in matrimony.

so happy for them, even though I didn’t know them at all. :)

Going moo on the cow in front of Ben and Jerry’s

The Night Safari!! I was already on half mast even though

the kids were like energizer bunnies. *chuckles*

Having a go on the congo drums

Tribal performance and fire throwing

Food at Ulu Ulu Safri Restaurant

Food of course, glorious food! Soya sauce chicken noodles.

Check out the plate painted with the cockerels! LOL

Tantalizing layout of Indian food.. chicken briyani, curried

vegetables, potato marsala, papadum and yogurt dip. Yum!!

Nostalgia… check out the clock and the tin cups!!

We caught the Animal Show at the Night Safari but no pictures as they did not allow flash photography. The hostess repeated that at least 7-8 times throughout the show as there were pig-headed and selfish people still insisting on using the flash!! Please don’t use the flash on nocturnal creatures as it hurts their eyes! Especially for the show animals, over time they will go blind..

We managed to catch the tram ride too and it was a great experience being so physically close to the nocturnal creatures in their natural (albeit created) habitat. We could literally reach out and touch them, even though that is not advised, unless you want your fingers (or more) chomped off. At one point, the tram even drove through a “swamp”. Very exhilarating experience and the kids were thrilled silly. :)

I am looking forward to the next visit already. We couldn’t manage to explore the Reptile Garden fully, which is a little disappointing as the kids and I are fascinated with snakes and crocodiles, and we missed out on the elephant and pony rides due to time constraints and an inability to physically split ourselves in two. I tis excruciatingly HOT and HUMID and I tried to overcome that by dressing light in cotton. The children were in cotton tees and shorts and I was in an off shoulder white cotton tunic and grey capris, and we all still felt HOT. Thankfully it was fun enough to distract us from the heat. I saw some ladies dressed in dress AND cardigan and I take my hat off to them. :)

Did I mention that the prices are very local unfriendly? The Indian briyani set I had? It’s a whopping $19. Drinks at $8 per serving! Photo taking with the animals at $5 per person. Thankfully we saved a lot on the entrance tickets as we got free passes to both the zoo and the Night Safari.

Barffie: The ceremony was held in a garden area that has NO poop… not near the animal enclosures.. but it’s rather warm though
