Can you make money doing what you love?

16 October 2008 3 Comments

A good pondering on the perennial question.

Do your art. But don’t wreck your art if it doesn’t lend itself to paying the bills. That would be a tragedy.

(And the twist, because there is always a twist, is that as soon as you focus on your art and leave the money behind, you may just discover that this focus turns out to be the secret of actually breaking through and making money.)

How true.

Lately I’ve been pondering quite a lot about this.

How many actually love what they do?

How many actually do what they love?

Are you earning a lot of money but feeling empty inside?

Are we being slowly but surely dehumanized by this state?

This is a very cruel fact. Most of the time, what we love don’s earn us money, what earns us a living is not something we love. But I think, putting it this way, I am doing what I am doing , so that I can continue to do what I love. This makes myself feel better.

the complexities such as administrative work and office politics might end up killing your passion if you happen to love what you do too. depends on people - some just prefer to keep it as a hobby and take work as work.

jialat: I think it is also a matter of managing our expectations. But I get where you are coming from.

Evie: Yes, sometimes taking your hobby and making it work can kill the passion. I am still finding the balance.
